What does a sales development representative do?

A sales development representative is a sales job. Specifically, it’s usually inside sales which means you’ll be working from an office or office setting handling inbound and sometimes outbound sales work.

You will be acquiring sales leads, following up with them, attending phone or web meetings for the purpose of selling your product, whatever that may be.

Sales reps that work in tech sell software and tech products. This is one of the most lucrative industries to work in and it’s good for entry-level sales careers and jobs where a college degree or experience might not be required.

Is an SDR a good job?

An SDR is a good sales job. These positions can be very high paying and many times, they come with perks like:

  • Flexible schedule
  • Remote work options
  • Benefits
  • Lucrative salary

This Tik Toker makes around $250K/year in tech sales. More and more young professionals are making a high salary in this job.

What are qualifications of sales development representative?

To be a sales development representative, you’ll need these qualifications:

  • Relevant work experience
  • Up to 3 years of sales experience (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills

You will need a good mix of soft skills to work in this position including leadership skills, being an excellent communicator and be great at problem-solving.

Skills an SDR needs

The skills an SDR needs are mostly soft skills.

  • Strong communication skills
  • Leadership skills/ability
  • Problem-solving
  • Creative thinking
  • Analytical thinking

You will be working in an inbound sales environment, converting leads into paying customers. You will need to interview prospects, determine their needs, make appropriate referrals and show them that the product you are selling is a solution to their problem.

You will need the above skills to excel in this position.

Becoming an SDR with training

Many SDR jobs do not require a college degree or experience. While this is a major advantage for workers that don’t have a degree and minimal to no experience in sales, that doesn’t mean training won’t be needed to be in your background.

In exchange for no degree and no experience, taking a short bootcamp or training program can often be substituted. These training programs are usually pretty affordable, compared to getting a degree at a 4-year college or university. They are also short-term, usually lasting under a year (many under six months) and you gain skills and experience.

One example of such program is the training program at Course Careers.

What is Course Careers?

course careers

Course Careers offers a technical sales program that teaches you the skills for work in tech sales.

After going through the training and internship, you will be on track to make around $60,000 starting salary per year then up to $100,000 per year within a few years!

What other job can you get trained for an make $60K straight after graduation?

My first job with a 4-year degree had a starting salary of $32,000/year and around 7 years later I was making $52K to $55K per year. Seven years in!

I could have taken a six month training program like the one Course Careers offer and be at six figures a few years after graduation, instead of half that seven years in. Not to mention, the cost savings of not attending a university.

How much does Course Careers cost?

Course Careers is $499.

You can pay one-time or do their 4-payment installment plan of $150 (X 4).

First, you can take their free introductory course. This course will show you what tech sales is about. You will learn about the industry to make sure it’s what you thought it was and you’re still up for the full training and career in the tech sales career field.

Then, you can go for the paid course ($499 or 4 payments of $150) which teaches you tech sales. When the course is over and you have completed training, the next step is the paid internship.

Internship takes up to a few months. You will get the experience you need to work in this field.

Is Course Careers worth it?

Yes.

I love that you get to learn skills, then get experience with the internship, before landing a job at (an average of) $60K/year for your first year.

TL;DR

A sales rep does inside sales.

This is one of the best jobs to do that does not require a degree. To get the skills and experience to land this job with an average salary of $60K/year first year, check out Course Careers.
