My first flip made me nearly 6 figures and since then I have flipped dozens of websites. It’s a thrilling, rewarding and fruitful side hustle that gives you a ton of perks like:

Website flipping is going into a website project with the intention of  investing in websites for profit. This is whether you build and flip a website or buy and flip a website.

Once you flip a website, you can flip many sites. I’ve personally invested my time and money into dozens of website projects and have made six figures website flipping.

How do you sell websites for profit in a business?

Can you make $2,500 per month with website flipping? Here’s the formula to get you there:

  • Aim to sell sites for $300 to $500 each
  • You will need to sell around 5 to 9 sites in a month to hit $2,500

This may sound like a lot but the process I can show you is super easy and it’s rinse and repeat. You can create these websites for flipping one at a time or you can batch them out in lots of three or 10 or however many sites you want to flip.

Website flipping is not new.

Tons of sellers have been doing this for years and if you head to one of the places I frequently use to sell my sites you will find other sellers that sell dozens of websites every single week.

Yes, website flipping can be profitable. That’s why there are thousands of business owners that invest in websites. Consider investing $100 into developing a website and flipping it for months later for $2000. You just made $1900 in four months from one website. What other investment can you get a return like that so quickly?

  • Add content and improve it, get it ready to flip
  • Flip the website

Here’s how you get started…

When you flip a website you can go in one of two directions.

You can buy a site or you can build a site.

Buying Websites for Flipping VS. Building Websites for Flipping

Buying a site is advantageous because you can get into a website that’s already existing and more seasoned. That’s going to make it easier to rank content and make money faster. The drawback is the investment which can range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars or more.

Building a site is cheaper and only requires a budget of around $50 per website. It’s more work to rank the site and make it income-producing but, it’s the cheaper alternative. And you get to develop the site any way you like, rather than takeover from where someone else left off, like with website buying.

Of these two options I prefer building websites. So that’s what we’re gonna talk about in this article.

Step 1: Pick a niche | Flipping websites

First, you need to pick a niche. Your niche is your websites mean topic like cooking, nutrition, fitness, travel, budgeting, fashion, camping, etc. next you are going to pick a website name and the website anymore match your domain name. You don’t have to put a whole bunch of thought into this.

The main thing is that the name should make sense for the kind of website that you’ll be building. I want to discourage you from using numbers in The website name order me name. I also recommend that you do not use hyphens, special characters or consecutive letters like XXX or ZZZ.

After picking knees and choosing your website name and domain name, you should check that your domain name is available by going to You can do a free domain search there to check availability.

Once you confirm that your domain name is available, it’s time to purchase web hosting and the domain. Web hosting is required when you’re running a professional website. It’s really simple to buy and after you have it, along with your domain, you’ll be free to start building your website right away.

Step 2: Add website content | Flipping websites

In this step, this is where you build a website an actually make the site. You will add website content and improve the website.

Once you’ve set up a website, you can add content.

The content is the meat of your website. You want to write excellent-quality content to optimize your website and grow your website.

  • Use SEO to help your website be seen in search engines
  • Review a range of websites to study the competition
  • Find websites in your niche and study what they’re doing well and poorly (then make your site better)
  • Try to make your project a great website

Step 3: Monetize| Flipping websites

Monetizing your site means you are making it income-producing. You do this with ads, affiliate marketing, and in other ways.

The easiest way to start making your website income-producing is by placing ads on the site. This will be passive income and you can start with Google Adsense for this. As your site grows, I recommend you switch to Mediavine (minimum 50,000 sessions per month).

I feel like marketing is another smart way to have your website begin to make money. You start by joining an affiliate network then you promote products in that network on your website and refer people using affiliate links.

Step 4: Promote your website to search engines

Promote your website to search engines and across the internet so your traffic can rise.

Promotion is how you will drive traffic to your website.

The website does not need to make money and it does not need to have traffic in order to sell in a website flip. But, it does make it easier to sell the website if it does have income coming in and traffic coming in, so keep that in mind.

When you try to balance the content creation and promotion you want to focus on promoting the site more. That’s because you can spend all this time creating content writing articles and outsourcing articles for your website but if you don’t have the traffic that means nobody’s going to read it was awesome articles. There are many ways you can promote which include using social media like posting to Instagram or creating a Tik Tok video.

You can also do email marketing, you cannot work online in Facebook groups and forums, as well as guest post for authority sites which can help your content and website be found online and attract traffic from search engines.

Step 5: Flip for profit to make money

When it’s time to flip your website, this will be a very exciting experience.

You are one step closer to your goal to make money.

Your sale can happen in as little as 24 hours or up to 7 to 14 days or longer. Most of my website sales happen in 3 to 7 days.

  1. Flippa: Flippa is a well-known online marketplace for buying and selling websites, domains, and online businesses. You can use Flippa to buy and sell online businesses. It has a large user base and offers various listing options to suit different budgets and needs. This is the site I use for selling starter websites without much profit or not making money or producing traffic. This is a good place to make a quick profit selling your website. You can set a price, run your auction or classified listing and flip your site! I usually run auction sales that last 3 to 7 days long so, within a week or so, my website is sold!
  2. Empire Flippers: Empire Flippers is a reputable marketplace specifically to buy and sell online businesses. I’ve sold a website on Empire Flippers before and had a great experience. I’d highly recommend them. They have a thorough vetting process and provide detailed listings with comprehensive information.
  3. FE International: FE International specializes in the sale of established and profitable online businesses. You can find different websites on FE International in a range of different niches. This is if you have an active website that’s seasoned with traffic and likely income-producing (turn a profit). They have a team of experienced brokers who guide sellers through the process and help optimize the value of their website.
  4. WebsiteBroker: WebsiteBroker is a platform dedicated to buying and selling websites of all types. It allows users to list their websites for sale and provides features such as pricing guidance and negotiation tools.
  5. Digital Exits: Digital Exits is a platform that focuses on selling mid-market and larger online businesses. They work with sellers to ensure a smooth and confidential sales process while connecting them with qualified buyers.
  6. Shopify Exchange: If you have an e-commerce website built on Shopify, you can consider listing it for sale on the Shopify Exchange marketplace. This is a good place acquire new sites, especially if your aim is to invest in e-commerce websites. It’s a platform specifically for selling Shopify-based stores.
  7. Reddit’s r/Entrepreneur: The subreddit r/Entrepreneur has a dedicated monthly “Buy/Sell/Trade” thread where you can list your website for sale. This community is known for its engagement with online business-related topics.
  8. Auction Marketplaces: Platforms like Sedo and GoDaddy Auctions primarily focus on domain names but also allow users to list websites for sale through their auction-style marketplace.
  9. Private Brokerages: There are also private brokerage firms that specialize in buying and selling websites and online businesses. These firms work closely with sellers to find suitable buyers and ensure a smooth transaction.
  10. Online Forums and Communities: Certain online forums and communities related to website flipping and online businesses allow members to list their websites for sale. Examples include Warrior Forum and DigitalPoint Forums.

This is an option as well, buying and flipping a website. This is when you purchase an active website, improve it, then flip it for profit. This is more complex and not for beginners.

But, if you feel up for the challenge and have the budget to buy websites, you can definitely take this up and give it a try.

What to consider when buying an existing website?

When considering buying an existing website, there are several factors to keep in mind. Here are some important considerations:

  • Niche and Market: Assess the website’s niche and market potential. Is it in a growing or established industry? Is there a target audience with demand for the website’s products, services, or content? Understanding the market dynamics will help determine the website’s potential for growth and sustainability.
  • Traffic and Audience: Evaluate the website’s traffic sources, volume, and audience demographics. Is the traffic organic, paid, or a mix? Are there recurring visitors or a steady flow of new users? Analyze the audience’s engagement and behavior to ensure it aligns with your goals and target market.
  • Revenue and Monetization: Review the website’s revenue streams and monetization methods. Is it generating income through advertising, affiliate marketing, product sales, or other means? Evaluate the stability and growth potential of the revenue streams to assess the website’s profitability.
