I made over $20,000 from blog flipping (and e) on the side and I’m going to share exactly how I did it. I stumbled onto blogging after getting ready to exit my first successful business, an e-commerce store. Blogging was very different from e-commerce and it appealed to me because:

  • It was low-key and low-stress
  • Very lucrative
  • Part-time
  • Flexible schedule
  • A solopreneur operation

First, it was a low-stress and low-key kind of business. Running an online store was stressful, a lot of work and took more time than when I was working a 9-to-5 job. It was lucrative, which is why I stuck with it so long but, eventually I grew tired of the business and decided to pursue another path with my business and that was content creation and blogging.

Blogging can be extremely lucrative. Every blogger doesn’t make a lot of money blogging. In fact, most bloggers don’t make any money, let alone a full-time income but, it is possible to make money blogging. Some of the most successful bloggers earn a very lucrative full-time salary, like Michelle Schroeder-Gardner who has earned $100K+ per month from her blogging business!

This course shares how she makes $50K+ per month from that, with affiliate marketing. I recommend it.

Next, blogging can be a part-time business. You can do it after work, on weekends, when you have some free time here and there. It’s incredibly flexible and yes, you can work part-time and earn a full-time income with blogging.

And, one of my favorite parts of blogging is that is can be done on your own, as a solopreneur! You don’t need a team to run a successful blogging empire. And, that takes me to blog flipping and how I made over $20,000 with it!

What is blog flipping?

Blog flipping works the same as website flipping except instead of flipping any kind of site, like a directory, online store, etc. you will be flipping a blog.

Blog flipping refers to the process of creating or purchasing a blog, building it up by creating high-quality content and driving traffic to it, and then selling it for a profit. The term “flipping” comes from the real estate industry, where investors buy properties, improve them, and sell them for a profit.

In the case of blog flipping, the process involves:

  • Identifying a profitable niche,
  • Creating or purchasing a blog in that niche, and then
  • Working to improve the blog’s content, design, and traffic.

This can involve a variety of activities such as optimizing the blog for search engines, building a social media following, and creating high-quality content that attracts readers and keeps them engaged.

Once the blog has been improved and is generating a steady stream of traffic, the owner can then sell it to a buyer who is looking for an established blog in that niche.

The buyer may be someone who wants to start their own blog but doesn’t want to go through the hassle of building it from scratch, or it could be an investor who sees the potential for long-term growth in the blog.

Blog flipping can be a profitable way to make money online, but it does require a significant investment of time, effort, and money to build and improve the blog before it can be sold. It’s important to do thorough research and due diligence before purchasing a blog, as there are many factors that can impact its value and potential for growth.

How do you start a blog?

Read my free guide on how to start a money-making blog.

It’s pretty easy to do, even for the most untech savvy individual. You can start a blog in less than an hour. It just takes a small budget to buy web hosting (Siteground offers hosting plans starting at $2.99/month) and a domain and you can launch your very own blog!

How many blogs have I flipped?

I’ve flipped tons of blogs of all kinds:

  • Nutrition and wellness blogs
  • Finance blogs
  • Make money online blogs
  • Travel blogs
  • Budgeting blogs

The sky’s the limit on how many blog websites you can build and flip! I teach how to start a website flipping business in my online course. I also have an ebook that teaches how to flip micro websites and my students have earned over $30,000 flipping websites.

Why I flip blogs

how to get money from blogs

Blog flipping is a fun, money-making side hustle. This high-income skill is one that once you learn, you can use over and over to make money in the future. It feels really rewarding to create something from scratch and then sell it for profit and it doesn’t necessarily take a lot of time, either.

I fell in love with blog flipping after the successful flip of my first blog for $12,000. I launched that blog, monetized it to around $1,000 a month and then flipped it for a profit! Then, more successful blog flips followed that!

These are some of the reasons I really enjoy flipping blogs:

  • Selling blogs instead of keeping them can be more profitable in the short-term.
  • Blog flipping is a fun, money-earning side hustle.
  • It’s a rewarding and fruitful side hustle.
  • I love the challenge of starting a blog in a new niche and monetizing it for the short-term and long-term
  • I run multiple blogs that I keep in my portfolio. I can’t keep all the blogs I create so selling the ones I don’t have time to manage is a good use of my time and gives me a return.

You might feel aligned with one or more of these reasons why you might be interested blog flipping.

Why do people buy blogs?

flipping income

People buy blogs for a variety of reasons, including:

To save time: Starting a blog from scratch takes a lot of time and effort. By purchasing an existing blog, a buyer can skip the time-consuming process of setting up the site, building an audience, and creating content.

To leverage an existing audience: An established blog with a loyal audience is a valuable asset. By buying a blog with an existing audience, a buyer can immediately start promoting their own products or services to that audience, or use the blog to drive traffic to other websites.

To expand their online presence: A buyer may already have a blog or website in a related niche, and buying an established blog can help them expand their reach and establish themselves as an authority in that niche.

To generate passive income: A profitable blog can be a source of passive income for its owner. By buying a blog that is already generating income, a buyer can start earning money right away.

To invest in an appreciating asset: Some buyers see blogs as an investment opportunity, with the potential for long-term growth and appreciation in value. They may buy a blog with the intention of improving it, increasing its traffic and revenue, and then selling it at a profit in the future.

Overall, buying a blog can be an attractive option for those looking to enter the world of blogging or expand their existing online presence. However, it’s important to do thorough research and due diligence to ensure that the blog is a good investment and has the potential for long-term growth.

How to make money blog flipping

how much do blogs cost

You make money blog flipping by:

1. Creating a blog website

The blog website can be built around any topic you like:

  • Food
  • Fashion
  • Travel
  • Money
  • Gardening
  • Golf

Literally, just about any topic is up for grabs with blogging. If you’re stuck on what topic to plan your blog around, consider your passions, interests and hobbies. While creating a blog around what you like isn’t necessary to create a successful blog flipping business, it’s an easy path than creating a blog about a topic you’re not interested in.

2. Selling the blog website for more money than your investment

The investment in building a blog can be up to $20 to $30, usually a lot less. Web hosting can run a few bucks a month (Siteground’s hosting starts at $2.99/month) and the cost of a domain can be as little as a dollar. Sometimes the domain is free with the purchase of hosting!

So, this is a very low capital business, which is why many people get into this industry. If you have up to $30 or so, you can start building and flipping blogs for profit.

If you invest $10 in building a blog, you will profitably flip your blog if you sell it for more than $10, including fees. The starter blogs I sell run $100 to $500 each and I’ve seen some blogs sell into the thousands so, I don’t think it’s hard to sell for a price higher than your investment.

3. Assisting the seller in the transition (transferring the blog from the you, the seller, to the buyer)

Lastly, once you sell your blog to the buyer, you’ll be available to answer questions and assist during the transfer.

And, that’s what it takes to be a blog flipper! I give step-by-step instructions in my course and ebook, if you need more support or guidance.

How long does it take to flip blogs

You can flip blogs in as little as a month or shorter. I’ve flipped blogs in as little as 24 hours. The more you build and set up blogs, the faster you’ll get and the easier the entire process will come to you.

How long does it take to sell blogs?

The time to sell blogs varies. It can take a few hours or a few months or longer. It depends on many factors like:

  • The market demand for a blog like yours
  • Seasonality
  • The platform you’re selling on

At the end of the day, it only takes one buyer to purchase from you. A lot of times, the time for selling the blog is out of your control. You should remain patient and not rush the process.

When is the right time to sell a blog

The right time to sell a blog depends on you.

If you’re building a blog to sell right away, you can list it for sale when you’re ready. If you want to hold onto the blog for a while to make it income-producing and drive traffic to it so you can sell for a higher price in the future, then you can sell it in the future.

For example, in Flipping It, I show people how to build starter sites that are not income-producing and not traffic-generating. In this type of scenario, you can literally sell as soon as your done building the blog.

There are other scenarios where you may want to drive a lot of traffic to the site over time, increasing the value and helping you fetch a higher sales price.

For example, a starter site with no traffic might sell for $400 whereas a more seasoned site with 50,000 monthly views of traffic may sell for $5,000.

Some of my blogs have sold immediately after I finished building it and others I decided to sell, several months or years after creation. In the end, there’s really no “right time” to sell. It’s based on your choice and when you feel ready to sell.

How much can you make flipping blogs?

The amount of money you can make flipping blogs can vary widely, and it depends on a variety of factors, such as:

  • The niche of the blog
  • Its traffic and revenue
  • The amount of timeand effort you invest in improving it, and
  • The demand for blogs in that niche

In general, the value of a blog is based on its potential to generate income, with most blogs being sold for anywhere from 10 to 30 times their monthly net profit.

So, for example, if a blog generates $1,000 in net profit each month, it could potentially be sold for between $10,000 and $30,000.

However, this is just a general rule of thumb, and the actual price of a blog can vary depending on a number of other factors, such as the quality of its content, the strength of its backlink profile, the size and engagement of its audience, and the overall potential for growth in the future.

It’s important to keep in mind that blog flipping is not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it requires a significant amount of time, effort, and investment to build up a blog and sell it for a profit. However, if done correctly, blog flipping can be a lucrative and rewarding way to make money online.

Who is blog flipping for?

Blog flipping is for people who:

  • Are interested in starting a money-making business or side hustle
  • Have a small startup budget
  • Have the time to run a blog flipping business (up to an hour a week)
  • Enjoy working behind a computer
  • Like the idea of running a solopreneur business

Who is blog flipping NOT for?

Blog flipping is not for people who:

  • Don’t have a computer with internet access
  • Do not have a budget (up to $20 to $30) to invest in this business
  • Don’t like computer work

How much does it cost to build a blog?

Here’s a quick rundown of the potential costs of building a blog…

  • $2.99/month for web hosting
  • Free to $20 for domain

Other costs may exist but, they are optional and not required to build a blog, like a premium website theme, premium plugins, etc.

How much does it cost to flip a blog?

When it’s time to flip your blog and sell it, the costs will include the platform fees you incur. For Flippa, there’s a $29 flat fee plus they keep a percentage of the sale when the blog sells. Other platforms have other fees and this will depend on where and how you sell the blog.

Where can you sell blogs?

  • Flippa: A marketplace for buying and selling websites, domains, businesses, and apps.
  • Empire Flippers: Buy and sell websites that are income-producing.
  • Facebook Groups: There are various Facebook groups that exist for buying and selling blogs. One is Website Flip Club.
  • Email messages: Connect with potential buyers who may contact you via email to facilitate the sale of your blog. This typically happens when you have an online presence where you share your business email address or make an announcement online, like on Reddit, LinkedIn, etc. about selling your blog.
  • Motion Invest: a platform for buying website businesses.
  • Blogs for Sale: This is a marketplace for buying and selling blogs. You can find a variety of different sites (all income-producing). This works for blog flipping if your blog is income-producing.

Bottom line

Here’s the bottom line about blog flipping and my journey of selling $20,000+ in blogs! It was fun, it was a lucrative side business that I still operate, and it was a rewarding endeavor I’d recommend others try out!
